GCSE Maths: Surface Area

Calculate the total surface area of prisms, cylinders and other 3D shapes. Practise it with adaptive questions for AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas.

What you need to know

The concepts examiners test on surface area, and what each one is really asking.

Calculate surface area of cubes and cuboids
Calculate surface area of triangular prisms
Calculate surface area of cylinders
Solve problems involving surface area

Where marks get lost

The exam technique that separates a correct method from a correct answer.

  • Calculating volume instead of surface area (multiplying all dimensions)
  • Forgetting hidden faces (e.g., only adding 3 faces of a cuboid instead of all 6)
  • Forgetting the circular ends when finding the total surface area of a cylinder
  • Using the wrong units (it should be squared, e.g., cm², not cubed)

Surface Area questions students ask

Is Surface Area on the Foundation paper?

Yes. Surface Area appears at both Foundation and Higher tier, though Higher papers take it further.

What should I know before starting Surface Area?

It builds on Area of 2D shapes and Properties of 3D shapes. If those feel shaky, practise them first — Surface Area questions assume them.

What is the most common mistake in Surface Area?

Calculating volume instead of surface area (multiplying all dimensions).

Which exam boards cover Surface Area?

All four we support — AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas. GCSE Maths subject content is set by the DfE, so the topic is common to every board; what changes is the paper structure and the grade boundaries.
