GCSE Maths: Units & Conversions
Convert standard metric units, areas, volumes, and use map scales. Practise it with adaptive questions for AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas.
What you need to know
The concepts examiners test on units & conversions, and what each one is really asking.
Where marks get lost
The exam technique that separates a correct method from a correct answer.
- Using linear conversion factors for area/volume (e.g. thinking 1m² = 100cm² instead of 10,000cm²)
- Multiplying when you should divide to convert to a larger unit
- Forgetting that map scale ratios have no units (so 1:100 means 1cm = 100cm)
- Confusing capacity (litres) with volume (m³)
Units & Conversions questions students ask
Is Units & Conversions on the Foundation paper?
Yes. Units & Conversions appears at both Foundation and Higher tier, though Higher papers take it further.
What should I know before starting Units & Conversions?
It builds on Multiplying/dividing by 10/100/1000 and Area and Volume formulas. If those feel shaky, practise them first — Units & Conversions questions assume them.
What is the most common mistake in Units & Conversions?
Using linear conversion factors for area/volume (e.g. thinking 1m² = 100cm² instead of 10,000cm²).
Which exam boards cover Units & Conversions?
All four we support — AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas. GCSE Maths subject content is set by the DfE, so the topic is common to every board; what changes is the paper structure and the grade boundaries.
